Why do I let people do this to me?

Feeling sorry for myself right now. My ex got in touch after over a year with no contact and gave me the impression that we might start up again. Only for him to change his mind a couple of days later (after I made him a lovely dinner and we got intimate). It's really knocked my confidence and I'm so angry with my self and him. I'm too vulnerable for s**t like this. I should have stayed well away from him. Should have protected myself better.

Creativity is just not happening, have 12 crochet granny squares to complete after doing 4 over the last couple of weeks. I have yet another half finished project to add to the millions of others.

Still job hunting, no more interviews yet, but not giving up.

Thankful for my best friend and my brother, who have been giving me lots of support as always. Lucky to have them.

My sister is enjoying Trinidad, kids also. They're moving into a house soon with it's own pool, half hour's drive to the beach. They played in the sea today even though it was raining, its still so warm. I'm so jealous. Can't wait to get out there and experience it for myself.

Not doing much as usual and feeling very low in energy. Don't feel down, down, down (like in the abyss), but do feel depressed, not helped by what my ex has recently done.

When will this end?....

As my dad texted me: Happy New Year to all my fans :)

Hope you all had a good celebration. I got too drunk with my brother but still had a good time. Slept all of New Year's Day. Good thing too, didn't have to go through hangover! Just come back home today. Have a job application to do tonight.

The weird thing that has happened to me is that my ex boyfriend got in touch and we're meeting up briefly tomorrow and then he'll come for dinner here Friday the 13th (maybe not such a good day to pick). My head is in a bit of a whirl. But if we only get a friendship back out of this it will be good. But now I'm fixating a bit. Don't want all these what ifs? floating round my head. We shall just have to see what happens. What will be will be.

Now that Christmas is over....

Now that Christmas is over I'm left with this kind of sinking feeling about the new year. The new year is meant to be all about new beginnings, changes and new starts. I just hope the new year holds some of this for me. I'm having a quiet celebration on New Year's Eve. Just me and my brother, some wine and lego! I hate big parties and the let down feeling at 12 o'clock. Me and my brother will be just fine, no pressure.

I've been sleeping a lot and then some nights not at all. I guess it's a side effect of my medications, but it's driving me mad. Need to get a routine going.

On a lighter note, got a granny square cushion cover pattern and yarn to create it with in a magazine lately. There are plenty of other things I should be doing like my sister's dress, but I have made 3 of the 16 squares needed for the cushion cover. I feel good about that.

My sister has gone now, got a text yesterday that they had arrived safely but exhausted. When I look out of the window it's grey and raining. I'm sure they have a much prettier window to look through in Trinidad. Wish I was with them.

How I'm Doing Right Now

Things haven't been great. Had to say goodbye to my sister who is moving with all her family to Trinidad, right after Christmas. It's a great opportunity for them, her husband has a great job at the University of the West Indies, and my sister will eventually be able to teach and tutor there. The kids will be in sunshine most of the time and they're going to a great school, but i will miss them terribly. Being unemployed doesn't help as I have no way of saving for the fare to visit them. She said they'll visit the UK about once a year but it'll be very expensive for them (I have 2 nieces and 1 nephew).

I've been looking for work, had 2 interviews but no job yet. I keep trying, but I'm beginning to feel like giving up. The competition is so high out there.

I mostly feel stuck. I have no motivation to do anything. I was going to make Christmas cards this year, but I keep putting it off. Soon it will be too late what with the posting dates. So I think it will be another year that I don't send cards.

I want to feel better and hope a job will kick start me back into life and living once more. Watch this space...

Night Out

Had a great night out with my sister and brother last night. First time in months that I've been out drinking and eating, just socialising really. We had a few drinks at this busy bar, but we sat outside, so I wasn't too overwhelmed by all the people. Then we went onto a gourmet burger restaurant and I had a fabulous bacon and cheese burger, fries and great real onion rings. Good time had by all :)

Felling Pretty Good Today

To make a change, I'm feeling pretty good today. My sister is coming to visit (she is soon to move to Trinidad for a long time, with her whole family). She's coming so we can celebrate our birthdays which have recently gone by. I'm looking forward to seeing her and spending time together with her and my brother (who thankfully, is not moving to Trinidad and staying put in the same city as me!).

I got this new book from Amazon recently. It has some gorgeous patterns (see below). The designs comprise of skirts, dresses, tunics, jackets and coats. It has full size patterns enclosed and they fit up to size XXL - Bust 44", Waist 36" and Hips 46". I am quite large in the bust so will have to alter the patterns to fit, same with the skirt, tunic and dress waists, but I hope to make something lovely from this book. I came across this article in the UK newspaper the Daily Mail:

As devotees of a quiet and contemplative pastime, they would be the last to make a fuss about it.
But quilters, it seems, have every right to celebrate their craft after researchers found that it is ‘uniquely’ good for you.
A study found quilting improved well-being in ways that physical and outdoor activities could not, and offered a creativity that had been ‘stifled’ in the modern world.
The University of Glasgow team concluded that all hobbies – ‘from reading to train spotting’ – should be looked at for their mental and physical benefits.

They interviewed quilters and found the activity helped their cognitive, creative and emotional well-being, particularly among older people.

The use of bright colours was ‘uplifting’, the activity distracted from the stress of work, and quilting offered challenges such as maths and geometry. It also increased confidence and had an important social side.\
Professor Jacqueline Atkinson, co-author of the study and a quilter herself for five decades, said: ‘Doing something that engages you and that you enjoy is key. As adults, we don’t often do enough that includes fun and play.

‘We put a lot into studying the use of green spaces and that’s useful to individuals and communities.

'But maybe we need to say there are other things too.’

Graduate student Emily Burt interviewed 29 members of the group and the transcripts were analysed for the study, published in the Journal of Public Health last week.
It concluded that: 'Whether it is growing vegetables, knitting a jumper or discovering a new scientific formula creativity may be fundamental for wellbeing and has received little attention so far within public health.

'Exploring creativity and what people do in their everyday lives, which they deem creative, may be an important avenue for wellbeing promoters.

'Additionally, more consideration needs to be given to all hobbies, from reading to train spotting, and their potential for enhancing wellbeing.'

Craft Scotland said interest in quilting amongst younger Scots was increasing but there was no measure for how many people take up the hobby individually or in clubs.

Emma Walker, chief executive of Craft Scotland, said the research backs up what they are seeing on the ground.
She said: 'We’ve definitely seen an increase in groups doing quilting socially but also individuals.
'There’s an emotive connection as well as financial need to recycle.

'Historically older groups of women did quilting but women in their early 20s are getting together and children's groups are also taking it up.

'People are investing in quality pieces of quilting, but also looking to make items themselves and re-use materials they have in their homes.

'I can only see the popularity increasing.'

The craft industry contributes around £3 billion a year to the UK economy.

How I'm Doing

I've been sleeping a lot. Feel low most days, but not in the deep dark well. Still going to therapy (CBT). But, this will end in a few weeks time. I have racing thoughts of stuff to make, but the sewing machine has yet to call me to it's chair. I've been playing around with digital scrapbooking and making birthday cards. At least that is somewhat creative. Currently reading Signature Styles (see this post: Signature Styles post. It's a great book.
Have been half-heartedly looking for work. But the idea scares the hell out of me. It's been 2 and a half years since I worked, I feel incapable of working right now, but how long can this unemployment go on for...?
I saw some friends a week ago, that I hadn't seen for 4 years. It was really nice to catch up with them and they brought me a lovely bunch of flowers to brighten up my living room. We went out to lunch and it was good, because I didn't feel anxious at all, which is unusual for me. Usually I feel anxious outside of my flat in some way, big or small.
I've bought a little fabric recently. God knows why as I'm not making anything. But LOVE new fabric. I plan to make a wallet with the Moda layer cake I got recently (see some of the layer cake here ) from a tutorial I saw on the web Layer Cake Wallet. It's time to change my wallet. I plan to put a zip pocket in it for coins and cash so they don't fall out.

Just got back from a visit to my Dad. He's retired now and moved from my birth city, Manchester, to a quite lovely village in Cumbria overlooking the River Kent estuary that goes into Morcambe Bay. Did lots of walking while I was there. Had aching muscles as my body not used to moving much !

On Good Friday my brother had a barbecue and he made all these delicious hamburgers, lots of different ones. Some of his mates were there too and I had a laugh.

Feeling tired and a bit low. Wish I had more motivation to go out and enjoy the sunshine.

Been sleeping very badly, so my consultant gave me some new sleeping tablets for 2 weeks. They aren't very strong and take about 2 to 3 hours to work, but at least I'm sleeping.

Though the other night I was so wired and racing thoughts through my head, the medication didn't work at all and I didn't sleep. That was horrible. But I slept last night for about 9 hours.

A drugged sleep isn't the same as normal sleep, but it's sleep and that's what I need.

Not doing much, mainly lazing on the sofa, watching TV and smoking too much. I feel like an old woman when I move !

I don't want to do anything or go anywhere. But an old ex boyfriend, who is a good friend now, has been coming to see me a bit and that lifts my spirits for a while.

Generally low and apathetic. I wish it was different. I really do.

Can't sleep

I can't sleep and it's driving me crazy. I need to be alert for therapy tomorrow (today). It was my mum's birthday yesterday. She would have been 66. Though she's been gone for nearly 7 years, it still hurts like hell.
I marked her birthday with a candle. It's still burning. She's buried in Uganda and I'm stuck in the UK. I wish I could put flowers on her grave.

My Ex

Two days ago, my ex boyfriend turned up on my doorstep with a cross stitch kit I'd left at his house from over a year ago. I was knocked by this because I still love him, despite all this time. Now I just can't get him out of my head. And heart. Why do I still love him after 18 months?
It was such a shock to see him on my doorstep. He came in for a quick coffee, and I tried to act all cool, asking questions about his new girlfriend, as if I didn't care. The whole experience was really weird.
As soon as he left I just burst into tears.

Procrastination

Well, the cross stitch purse from the Cath Kidston kit is ready to assemble. Has been for a while. Needs to be ironed, sewn together and zip set and sewn in.
For some reason I just can't get myself to the sewing machine to do it!
I did the Hello Kitty tapestry instead, with the intention of sewing the purse once that was finished.
Though it's a present for my niece and I have about 2 weeks time before I have to finish it, for her birthday, I can't understand why I just can't finish it.
I have such a long list of half finished, nearly finished items I really can't afford to mess about. I thought my mood was lifting, looks like my motivation is still lacking...

Hello Kitty Tapestry

I made this Hello Kitty tapestry. Took ages, but I found working on this much preferable to watching tv.
I plan to make up the Cath Kidston purse soon, the embroidery is finished just needs to been sewn and set the the zip in. It's for my niece's birthday in March so I have plenty of time.

Extra - 26th March 2011: Have framed and hung this on the wall now.

Along with doing a bit of cross stitch here and there, I'm also being social again. Saw a very old friend yesterday, a girl I met when I was in Link House Crisis Centre tomorrow, and my mate's mum, who have a good relationship with on Wednesday.

I also managed to overcome my fear of public travelling (instead of taxis) and got the bus last week to collect my prescription. Felt proud of myself. Find that listening to my MP3 player helped the anxiety.

Beginning to feel a little better again. It feels weird....

Another update

Not much happening. Not utterly depressed but lack energy and feel low. Sewing machine still untouched. Just covered up in hope of something happening to it....
I'm in cognitive behavioural therapy now (CBT). Only had a few sessions but feel hopeful about it.

Been quiet here... things not so great, but I have started my CBT therapy, early days, so can't say it's doing anything yet. It's hard and draining though.

Not getting out of the house and getting taxis or lifts to appointments. Doing very little at home but watch TV.

The suicidal intensity has gone. I still think about it know and again, but not in a way where I want to do it for real.

Sewing machine remains untouched and getting dusty. I miss it.

Money a bit of a nightmare, the government cut my mortgage (everyone's) in half. We just got 2 weeks notice. But I recently qualified for another benefit; Disability Living Allowance, which means I can make up the shortfall. I'm lucky though other people are at risk of loosing their homes because of the new policy change. So far not impressed with our new government.

Being helped

I've been in a mental health crisis unit for the last week. I was was very low and extremely suicidal and my CPN got me a room at this house. It's non medical so not like the usual mad mental health wards. I feel marginally better and tonight I've been let out for my first night at home alone. I'll be there another 3 weeks approximately and plan to take advantage of all the support they have to offer.
But it is nice to be home.

Things appear to have taken a turn for the worse. I fell quite low and motivation is zero. I'm supposed to pick up a prescription today, but I just can't do it. Leaving the house, the bus ride etc. all seem just to much.

It was the anniversary of my mum's death last month, so I've been thinking about her more than usual. I really miss her and need her right now.

I feel stuck.

Life slightly better

I feel a difference in me. Don't know what it is. Not sleeping well and very tired, but yet there is this slight change for the better. Maybe the meds are finally working, maybe Canada was a boost, maybe....

Whatever it is I feel ok most of the time. Still doing little and struggle with wanting to sew but not quite making it to the machine.

Been able to run small errands like going to the doctors and library without feeling like it's a mountain to climb. Less fear of the outside world. Though it still is a little scary !

Back in Blighty

Well I'm back.
Came back on Wednesday, but just had the chance now to blog.

I had a wonderful time and my mates really entertained us and looked after us so well.

Having a bit of a downer - come down, I think, from having had such a good time and doing so much. I did more stuff in the 2 weeks I was there, than I've done in the last 6 months ! Some may not think I did that much, but I know for me I did a lot in comparison to the usual.

The weather was mostly warm, sunny and dry. A few rainy days. The night we left, my friend's youngest said "it was raining, because it's crying, because you are leaving". That really touched me and made me sad at the same time.

It was great to be near the sea again and the air was so fresh, hardly needed my inhaler at all. Considered staying and becoming an illegal immigrant! The little bit of Canada I have seen has got me really smitten. I'm a single girl with no ties, so who knows, maybe one day...

I did a lot of shopping so I'm totally skint - but it was worth it. Got some lovely stuff.

Finally here in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Having a great time catching up with my best mates and their lovely kids.

Weather is sunny and fresh and my mood feels lifted quite a lot.

Not sleeping much but that feels ok, don't feel as lethargic as I did in the UK.

Off to the Halifax harbour this afternoon for sightseeing and ice cream ! :)

4 weeks till Canada

I have been very lucky to get a free trip to Canada. I'm going on the 10th May for 2 weeks. I'll be staying with my best friends in a town called Halifax in Nova Scotia. I'm accompanying their mum and she is kindly paying for my ticket. There's no way I could've afforded it on my own.

My best mates emigrated back there in October 2009 and I've missed them like crazy. The husband is Canadian and the wife English (we met at school and have been friends for such a long time). They have 2 wonderful kids that I have missed a lot. They have a great gift of cuteness and making me laugh.

Got this lovely wallet from Owl Say Designs on etsy (see shop list to right) in anticipation. Love the Amy Butler fabric.

Baby steps

I want to make this small handbag from Cath Kidston's book Sew!, for a good friend who has been helping me out a lot recently. But I've just not been able to do it.

So I thought I'd break it down and just cut out the pieces today and see if I can start some of the sewing tomorrow.

I'm using a Cath Kidston print for the exterior and plain red for the lining. The handle will be a red/maroon webbing.

I have allsorts of ideas whizzing round my head of stuff I want to make. But, I still can't get myself to do anything about it. Feeling low and lacking much energy. Feel stupid, I have all these great ideas yet just lie on the sofa watching trash TV.

Sleep and good news

The other night.... Wednesday night I didn't sleep at all. My meds do that to me sometimes. It makes me feel really awful. But last night I slept well and though still exhausted thankful for a restful sleep.

I've also won my benefits appeal which means I get a slightly higher rate and don't have to keep sending in sick notes. I'm so pleased because the whole stressful process has been going on for so long.

Despite the increase in medication I'm still the same. Low, exhausted and depressed. I went to visit my sister and her kids and though it was good to see them I just couldn't connect in the same way I usually would.
I feel lousy and hopeless right now.

Not doing so well. Days all melt into one and I'm doing very little.

My psychiatrist changed the dose of one of the antidepressants, so shall see if that makes any difference.

Feel low and exhausted almost all the time. Just don't know what to do.

All creativity has been drained from me and haven't made a single thing in months.

Something Postitive

A good friend of mine came over yesterday and helped me put some bookshelves together (my sewing books are no longer a heap on the floor!). We made a start on cleaning and throwing out in my living room. It's not finished, but it looks great already and has lifted my mood somewhat.

Only downside is that I ache all over! I haven't moved around so much in months and my muscles aren't used to it! At least I got myself moving rather than a day on the sofa.

I've been talking to my sister more for support. I still feel pretty low, and my sleep is really messed up, (falling asleep after 4 am and sleeping until late afternoon), but this boost (even if temporary) has been great.

Quick Holiday Update

Spent a nice quiet day with my brother. He makes a great roast. Chilled out and watched telly.

Under the same stress with my debts and may have to consider selling my flat, which would devastate me to be honest. My other option is to get a job. My sister is helping me with money, but she can't do that forever so we've set a 6 month limit and if I haven't got a job by then...

Feel weighed down and quite depressed with it all. Not noticing much difference with the increase to the medication. Wondering if they do anything at all.

Haven't sewed or made a single thing for weeks, just can't bring myself to do it. Spend all days in the house doing very little. But don't want to, or don't know what else to, do.

Things still feel bad. My psychiatrist has increased the dose of one of the antidepressants I take. It will take a few weeks to notice any effect, if any happens.

I saw a debt counsellor today and have been armed with lots of advice on how to hold off my creditors and I hope it all works. The depressing thing is my out goings exceed my income by about £200 a month, so I don't know what I'm going to do about that...

I have been fighting the urge to call Andy as now he's just angry with me and shouts. It just makes me worse and I end each call as a crying mess.

I'm not doing much. Still sofa and tv bound. Have little energy and just want the day to go as quickly as possible so I can sleep.

Mood pretty low and I think about suicide a lot. But I don't want to hurt anyone, and that thought is keeping me safe so far.

I miss Andy like crazy and wish we hadn't split, so still nursing a very broken heart.

So not much has changed, but I'm trying...

Down and out

I feel very low. I can't get Andy out of my mind. I try not to call him as it just ends in lots of tears, but it's so hard not to call him. Afterwards I just feel stupid. I'm a dressing gown attached to the sofa. Want to make stuff, but can barely do anything. So many things are going wrong, I don't know how much longer I can stand it.

Trying to remain calm

Despite the trouble with my benefits and Andy I'm trying to keep calm and not lose it completely. I do feel on the edge and I do feel suicidal. But I have to think of those who love me and what it would do to them.

One thing to look forward to is that I'm visiting my friends tomorrow. They clubbed together and bought me tickets. I'll stay in London just over a week. Hopefully it will create enough of a distraction and make me feel a little better.

So the motto is: keep calm and carry on !

Job done

It was awful and there were lots of tears (and a bit of begging from me) - but I got my stuff from Andy's. Unfortunately I forgot one or two items, so still need to see him to get them back. I feel very low.

Got the bad news today that I failed the benefits medical test for ESA. I don't understand it and don't know what to do next. It means all my benefits will be stopped, so don't know what will happen with the mortgage...

I'm so angry as their decision isn't based on anything I wrote in the questionnaire or anything I said at the assessment. They haven't even communicated with my doctors. I can't cope with all this.

Today I have to get my stuff from Andy's. It's the final nail in the coffin of the relationship. I'm dreading it. There are no words to explain just how badly this has affected me and no words to explain how broken my heart is. I want to feel different. I don't want this to happen. But it has, and I have no idea how I'm going to cope. Usually I know what I'm going to do, know how I'll take care of myself. This time I haven't a clue. I'm lost.

Andy ended our relationship yesterday. He thinks we can't sustain a relationship when he really doesn't have time for a relationship (which he doesn't). But it's not what I want. I'm a mess and I feel set back by months. I can't stop crying, I'm over medicating. A mess in pajamas, stuck to the sofa with no reason to get up. I wish I could hate him. It would make it easier. Now I'm just alone and still in love with a man who doesn't want me.
